7 Photography Tips to learn from a 3 year old

Mac, a 3 year old, gave us a few pointers about photography, pay close attention to his wisdom and photography tips.

You may think that 3-year-old Mac is learning to use a camera, but actually he’s teaching us adults some mighty powerful photography tips:

  1. Don’t get hung up on your equipment, learn to take off the cap, turn it on, press the shutter and get going

2. Take pictures of what you love! He went right after his backpack, zebra and dolphin.

3. Visualize your shot: With his dolphin he knew before he pressed the shutter “I want his eye”

4. When in doubt go out! After shooting inside he got right up and went outside! Don’t sit on your butt waiting for shots, go out and find them!

5. Connect with your subject, whether people or not “I want to say cheese on the trees!”

6. Show the photos you’re proud of to others, even if you have to be insistent! “Hey look it!”

7. Have that child-like sense of newness and discovery that keeps photography (and life) always fresh and interesting!

Watch the video and practice these 7 points and show us your results on our Photo Critique page.

Who knows, maybe you’ll feel like a kid again!

  • There is so much to learn from kids. In fact, their mind and creativity works so much better than adults'.

  • getting a head start at 3, who knows where he'll be by the time he's 10 (and where photography will be?)
