Ask A Pro: How To Get Night Photos Without Heavy Software?

Q: Is there a way to get great photos of the night sky without using heavy image editing software? I have a DSLR (Canon 70d) and I have a tripod etc. But my PC is a simple netbook. I’m trying to get photos of the night sky and a lot of tutorials I have seen require a powerful computer to run editing software.

A: There are a ton of good online editing sites that allow you to stitch photos and do some advanced photo editing without having to use any of your own computer power. Picmonkey.com has a good set of tools. Fotoflexer is also a decent one but most of this will depend on what you’re trying to do. Astrophotography is pretty broad, so in order to better answer your question, we would need to know whether you’re trying to do long shutter drags, HDR, timelapses and/or stitches. I hope we’ve given you a good place to start.
