We bring you another video from the AYP archives. We were in San Francisco with Michael Zagaris, also known as the “Z-man”. Michael has shot some of the most amazing rock and roll photos in his career. He became the band photographer for the Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and many other legends. Early in his career, he was known as a rock and roll insider who took photos of what was, not what was expected; as an insider today, he does the same thing for 21 century bands and artists. Zagaris is also the team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland A’s, and is known as sports “inside-out shooter.” In this video, Zagaris explains his approach to photography, how to “become what you shoot,” and focus on your subject. His unique techniques and tips on composition will help any photography capture more raw emotion and energy in their photos.

Michael Zagaris was born in 1945 and grew up in the central valley of California. He attended George Washington University and played both football and baseball while studying politics. In 1971 Michael began shooting the most influential musicians of the decade including Ten Years After, Humble Pie, Grateful Dead, Blondie, and The Clash. His unique perspective led to many editorial gigs. Michael lives in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district where he has been since 1973, and continesu to shoot music, sports, fashion, and culture.
