Here’s an interesting video where a new photographer has 1 week to learn how to use professional photography gear including studio strobes, a Canon 550D, and some L lenses. These photos are compared to a “professional” photographer and a third party has to guess who is the professional and who is the fraud.

Yau’s photos suck. Pro? Perhaps but only in the business sense because composition is way off. No need to include so much negative space unless doing editorial work for a magazine, a little space to print crops is ok but this was just overkill. The rule of thirds is to divide visual weight so as to look at multiple interesting subjects/aspects; but a white background really?

I think it depends on the buyer/admirer/critic. Different people like different styles of photography. Yes, knowing manual, RAW, composition, lighting, photoshop, symmetry, etc. is important. What is more important is the “personality” of the photo.
Do this again but with a beginner that knows at least the basics and has at least some understanding of composition, it will be much more interesting I think.
I’d probably fail too with Kai as my mentor. Under Lok’s wing i’d have a decent chance after a week

Just based off that dudes body language and facial expressions, a child could’ve deduced he was a fake.
I thought the newby did a surprisingly good job all things considering. But was really surprised at how poor the, so called, pro’s work was. Not up to pro standards in my opinion going by these images. There are some really good professional photographers out there who are worth paying good money to; but, research is needed to find them.

The Pro was just as bad as the amature. Yau At 11:30 All his photos lacked headroom and photo 1, the cut off shoes? 2nd shot huge headroom and tiny girl halfway down. 3rd shot, her face is lit, his is very dark,. guess hes to die soon, and oh that headroom. Why would we want to see bodies. 4th shot is at least lit well and looks like a computer screen background. but still, TOO MUCH HEADROOM. Ok,. Then there’s Kwan, And All those shots sucked.

There is a Channel 4 programme (UK) made a while back called “Faking It” which did this exact challenge but it was a provincial NHS radiographer that had to fake being a cool London fashion photographer. I tried this once when my wedding photographer mate was sick. I used a Casio !QV-10 I found at home as my mates DSLR was too complex. My secret was to take 1000 photos and spend weeks choosing the best.
You guys picked a dummy for this. Frustrating to see him not even trying.
This frustrates me.
How aperture and depth of field work together actually isn’t that difficult to grasp, expecially for a guy that’s adept in IT stuff. If he didn’t understand it, it must have been not well explained. Kai W wanted to send a message, and that guy had to be the dummy for it. Not cool of you guys, seriously. You have disappointed the community. You cannot even be a good swiper of dirty streets in a week when put in competition against someone who’s been doing it for years.

Here in Brazil borns a new “photographer” every day.The lowest DSLR prices makes everyone think could be a pro. Just buying equipments and printing a business card.

Learning to get profesdional results takes 1000’s of photos to just figure out lighting, composition and correct lens to use. Toss in some film speed, exposure time, and focal plan. You just can’t teach that in 7 days. It had taken me 2 semesters of college level photography to figure its stuff out and I had to use a darkroom and Black and white only film.

Historically the were since their partnership with Adobe in 1985 and the licensing of postscript which led to desktop publishing and then animation and photoshop (well before the pc got it). They were also pushed and heavily discounted in many arts and creative colleges which led to them being the mainstay of creatives in all fields. IBM pushed windows DOS for business – it’s pre-existing niche, so the mac and it’s more intuitive GUI was pushed the other way.
it is funny, but the course is more of a joke than a real course…of course ^^ Its mad simple to get the grips of the basics in a dslr, and some jargon you can pick up in a matter if 10-15 minutes of talking about it. so it all depends. but I belive you can learn to be a good pro photographer in less than 1 day if you really focused on the main points and nothing els ^^

This is just one of the things I’ve observed, but most pro photographers do not hang their cameras off their necks. They prefer holding it. I’ve seen someone shooting with a DSLR on auto mode. I shook my head.
