AYP Archives: Natural Lighting Tips – Bob Holmes

Who better to get natural lighting tips from than three-time Travel Photographer of the Year award-winner Bob Holmes. For over 30 years, Holmes has been photographing all over the world and his travel photos have appeared in National Geographic, Departures, and 46 books as the sole photographer. Working outdoors on most of his trips, Holmes is an expert at using natural lighting in his photography; his main tip: be prepared to capture a fantastic shot at any moment. Bob also shares his tips for working with natural lighting:

Key Points

  • Learn to look at light as the camera looks at it
  • View the camera as an extension of yourself
  • Always check your camera settings (ISO, White Balance…etc)
  • Do your research
  • Only carry what you need
  • Not just look, but see your photographs
  • Be aware of what you crop in/out of your image
  • Keep shooting

Take these tips and show us some of your photos in our photo share.
