Sometimes you stumble upon an opportunity for a photo-essay right in front of you, which is what happened this afternoon right on our little street. The Kiwanis Club had restored a flag pole that had been out of repair for 25 years, at the small park at the end our street. Our local boy scout troop color guard performed the ceremony, which you see here.
We discovered this on the way our on a walk so I ran back and grabbed my 5D mark II, literally as the ceremony began, and shot these images that you see here. Yes, my favorite is above, blown out crating a dream-like effect. The following images link together as a photo essay, as Daniel Milnor had discussed on my show Advancing your photography, a very helpful video.
I recomend to you this simple exercize:
1. Watch Dan Milnor’s video
2. Look for an event of any kind in your area, your school, at work, etc.
3. Go out and shoot it, aiming to tell its story.
4. Edit them into a series.
5. Add your best to our Photo Dojo as an assignment.
Since our lives are one photo essay after another this is a good skill to get on top of.
